Here's a few pix of Maldon Boating Lake in Essex. It has undergone an extensive refurbishment and is now excellent. It has been dredged to a depth of 900mm with a 300mm shelf about 150mm deep all the way round apart from the launch area which is 900mm deep.
Many thanks Mick. Please click on the photo above to view Mick's photos. Mark.

Info from Trevor Smith.
"Maldon Yacht Pond is by the full-sized Malden Yacht club, furthest from the Hythe, along the Promenade. You can watch Thames Barges go by as you sail."
There is plenty of information and photos of this pond on the website of the Association of Model Barge Owners, www.modelbarges.org.uk
The pond is being refurbished and was supposed to be finished by Easter 2006, but the AMBO say that there will be no sailing at least till December.
A large pond 300 yards & 100 yards along the promenade, it has three islands and is salt water. Used as a rowing lake and by the Sea Scouts as well as the Model Boat Club which has 100 members. 100% access with path all round, but rarely used by club members for free sailing.
The islands look massive so you can see why it's not for free sailing.

Type: Purpose-built model boat pond
Location: Marine Parade West (turn right at the pier).
Rectangle surrounded by a low wall with 100% access. For toy boats rather than larger yachts.
The whole Marine Gardens area has recently been refurbished as part of the massive 'Parklife' project paid for by the Heritage Lottery Fund. This refurbishment included the yacht pond.
Other facilities, according to 'visiteastofengland.com'
"The capital of the 'Essex Sunshine Coast', Clacton is a popular seaside town with tree-lined streets, long sandy beaches and beautiful seafront gardens. The fun-packed 19th C. pier (the world's largest) offers traditional fairground rides, sea fishing and the RNLI lifeboat house. Try out a range of watersports (sailing and jet skiing), or enjoy an evening out at one of the two theatres. The traditional town centre offers a good range of shops, restaurants and pubs."

The following image, of the Butlin's pond, is now part of a lost world: you can't go there any more. Butlin's at Clacton opened in 1938 and closed in 1983.
