West Yorkshire

Location - Town: Huddersfield - Huddersfield Society of Model Engineers
Location - County: West Yorkshire
Description/directions to location: In allotments at the end of Highfields Road, just off the Halifax Road out of Town, about 200 yards outside the ring road.
Type: Other - more info below
Size: Medium / Small
Depth: "Waders"
Shoreline access: Full access
Toilets / Shop / other facilities: members and guests only, but regatta / open days are, well, open! We have a small kitchen which supplies drinks and hot/cold sandwiches etc on regatta days, and are currently building a toilet block to replace the elsans.
Local model boat club: yes
Website: http://www.hsme.me.uk/
Any restrictions? (Noise, speed, etc): no I.C. engines. too shallow for yachts except 590/575 types (usually 9 to 12 inches deep - just too much for wellies !)
Anything else to add?: Pond is approx 50ft x 150ft and was originally built at the turn of the century as a curling pond, hence the lack of depth as you only need a thin layer of ice and you are sorted. We also have multi gauge elevated steam track (3.5, 5 and 7.25") running round the site perimeter

Ilkley Tarn

County: W Yorks

Type: Originally a millpond, in a surprising location high over Ilkley with views across the town. The lake was concrete-edged by the Victorians and given a gravel path round it. So it is not a purpose-built pond, but it is a good place to sail.

It has recently (2000) been sealed for leaks and restored. Suffers a bit from overhanging vegetation. Described by a recent management plan as 'an important amenity feature', which means a place where people like to go. Therefore it is not likely to be allowed to decline into a wildlife pond.

You need to be fit to get there, you can't drive and it's a bracing walk uphill.

How to walk to it
