Leave
the marina and head up stream through the beautiful
town of Abingdon (photo at top of page). |

Shortly
after Abingdon Bridge we come to Abingdon Lock, the
first of 5 or 6 locks for the day depending on how
far you would like to motor...or moor up and watch
the world go by. The locks are operated by a lock
keeper so there's no heavy pushing and pulling, and
they are are immaculately maintained.

There
can be a short wait for the locks in the summer,
but that's all part of the fun. If it's not busy
and we keep motoring it's possible to pass through
Oxford and reach Godstow Lock.
Godstow
is well known for its Abbey ruins, a few metres away
from the river. It was originally a nunnery dating
back to the 1100s. Today, only the walls and ruins
of the chapel remain.

Abingdon
to Godstow and back is a full day of motoring. If
the locks are busy we should still be able to make
it to Oxford and back with plenty of time to stop
off on the way for a picnic or pub lunch.
